ASD ANNUAL MEETING AND AWARDS!

June 15, 2019 @ 9:30 am - 3:00 pm

Date: Saturday June 15th

Location: Killens Pond State Park Nature Center (sorry park admission fees apply)

Schedule:

Coffee and fellowship: 9:30 am

Business Meeting at 10:00 am

Special elections for President (one-year replacement) and At-Large Board Member (we forgot to elect this position last year, so this is for one year as well).

Regular elections for Secretary and Treasurer (two-year terms)

Lunch: noon

Public Program: 1:00 pm

The afternoon public program will focus on the human burials discovered at the Avery’s Rest site near Rehoboth Beach. The burials at that 17th-century site are believed to include the remains of some of the earliest enslaved individuals know in Delaware, and the project received some press attention last year when the preliminary results of the skeletal analysis were released by physical anthropologists from the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of Natural History. This event is open to the public Free with Park admission.

At 1:00 pm Mr. Dan Griffith, former director of the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs and an archaeologist with over 40 years of experience in Delaware, will present the illustrated talk “The Discovery and Recovery of the Burials at Avery’s Rest.” He will detail how the burials were discovered and the excavation process.

At 2:00 pm Ms. Raquel Fleskes, an anthropology doctoral student at the University of Pennsylvania, will present her talk entitled “DNA Research of the Avery’s Rest Burials” which will explain the genetic profile and results for the Avery’s Rest site human remains.
